Paul Yank’s sculptures are primarily created out of welded and forged steel. Using thin rods of steel, Yank drew his subjects in three-dimensional drawings in space, while capturing their character through the melting and molding of their features. Yank’s addition of Tiffany styled stained glass brings each subject to life creating brilliance in color and drama. Paul Yank’s sculptures are one of a kind, avant-garde, and innovated in their contribution to the art world.
Yank started his professional career as a sculptor about 60 years ago. He was selected as sculptor-in-residence for Milwaukee’s natural history museum in 1958 through a nationwide competition. In that eight-year role, Yank thoroughly studied cultural anthropology as he designed and created three-dimensional displays for what is now known as the Milwaukee Public Museum. That and his earlier two-year study in Kyoto, Japan while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps aroused his awareness and knowledge of world cultures that provided subject matter for a lifetime of artwork.
